The East Village is a neighborhood situated on the East Side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. The neighborhood is described as the East of Bowery along with Third Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south. The area is also known by the name East Village. East Village contains three subsections: Alphabet City, about the avenues that are characterized by only one letter in the eastern portion along with the west side of First Avenue; Little Ukraine, situated near Second Avenue and 6th and 7th Streets; and the Bowery, located within the street with the identical name.
It was initially thought to be the case that East Village was occupied by the Lenape Native Americans and was later divided into plantations by Dutch colonists. The 19th century was the time of discovery. Initially, it was realized that the East Village contained many of the most lavish homes in Manhattan. By the middle of the century, it grew to include a sizeable immigrant population–including what was once referred to as Manhattan’s Little Germany–and was considered part of the nearby Lower East Side. The 1960s saw many artists, musicians, students, hippies, and musicians move into the neighborhood as East Village was given its distinct identity. Upscale Neighborhood
The Commissioners’ plans and the grid of streets resulted in the city’s northward expansion. It was a short time when the neighborhood that encompassed what is now the Lower East Side, which is now referred to as the East Village, was one of the most prosperous residential areas in the town. Bond Street between the Bowery and Broadway, situated just to the west on the area today what is now the East Side within present-day NoHo, was believed to be the city’s most lavish street in the 1830s. It was the home of structures such as those of the style known as Greek Revival Colonnade Row and rowhouses Federally. The high-end character of the area could be due to many factors, including an increase in commerce and population after the construction of the Erie Canal during the early 1820s.
Growth
The East Village became a center of the counterculture in New York. It was also the site that was the birthplace and the base for many artistic movements, including punk rock and The Nuyorican literature movement. Numerous older Yiddish theaters were transformed into Off-Broadway productions. The Public Theater at 66 Second Avenue was later converted into the Phyllis Anderson Theater. Most buildings on East 4th Street hosted Off-Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. They were The Royal Playhouse, the Fourth Street Theatre, the Downtown Theatre, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, and The Truck & Warehouse Theater right next to the Bowery and Second Avenue.
