Flushing is one of the neighborhoods in the north-central region in the New York City borough of Queens. Flushing is the fourth largest Central Business District located in New York City. Downtown Flushing is a significant commercial and retail zone centered around Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue. It is the third busiest street in New York City, behind Times Square and Herald Square.
Flushing was founded as a settlement in New Netherland on October 10, 1645. It was situated along the east bank of Flushing Creek. The town was called Vlissingen in honor of Vlissingen, the Dutch city Vlissingen. The English assumed control over New Amsterdam in 1664, and when Queens County was established in 1683, The “Town of Flushing” was one of the five original towns in Queens. Immigrants, made up mostly of Chinese and Koreans and Koreans, arrived in Flushing during the latter half of the 20th century. In the 1970s, the Chinese community was established in the vicinity of Flushing, and its demographics were primarily non-Hispanic white. Taiwanese started the surge in migration, followed by other Chinese communities. An estimate from 1986 by The Flushing Chinese Business Association estimated 60 000 Chinese from Flushing alone. In 1990, Asians comprised 41 percent of the area of Flushing, which included Chinese making up 41 percent of the Asian population.
The area that is East Flushing, technically within Greater Flushing, also houses a large Chinese community and the majority of Downtown Flushing. But, East Flushing also substantially comprises Irish, Greek, Russian, Italian, and Jewish communities and communities of Indians and Sri Lankans, Malaysians and Hispanics, primarily Colombians and Salvadorans. The neighborhood is more diverse in appearance as compared to Downtown Flushing because of the more evenly distributed different ethnic groups that make up East Flushing residents resulting in the presence of more ethnic-based companies catering to the various communities instead of the predominant presence of Chinese and more or less, Korean companies in Downtown Flushing.
